by Luke Luby on March 29, 2021

Darby McDevitt, a writer that has worked on multiple Assassin's Creed titles, is leaving Ubisoft after having spent ten years with the company. March 26 was his last day at Ubisoft Montreal, and he is leaving to "set forth on a new adventure." However, he didn't say what this new adventure would be and didn't elaborate on whether or not it would be in gaming.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Mr. McDevitt said:

"After a decade of working with brilliant people, creating stories & characters for an incredible series, & interacting with our wonderful fans, I have decided to set forth on a new adventure. A special thanks to all the fans & content creators that have supported & expanded on our work over the years. Thank you for your kind attention! You have my deepest respect & admiration. It has been the honor of a lifetime to get to know so many of you."

Darby McDevitt's career at Ubisoft spans quite an impressive list of games. Alongside serving as Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Revelations' lead writer, he wrote the Assassin's Creed short film, Embers. Outside of these, he had roles on Assassin's Creed II: Discovery and Assassin's Creed Bloodlines. His most recent work on the franchise was with Valhalla, which was met with critical and commercial acclaim.

However, he has worked on other games outside of the franchise. For instance, he was one of a handful of developers to be trusted on games set in The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia universes. Mr. McDevitt also wrote for The Sims 2.Throughout this time, the games he worked on continued to be met with acclaim. In many of these cases, the writing was singled out and praised.

Darby McDevitt isn't the only high-profile name to leave a big gaming company recently, as Johnathan Warner has also left Bioware.
