The Dota 2 International 10 Tournament Heads to Romania

After Sweden refused to host The International, Dota 2’s premier esports tournaments is heading to Romania
by Tit Krajnik on July 08, 2021

The International 10 will be held in Bucharest, Romania, Valve announced on Wednesday, July 7. The Dota 2 tournament was initially planned to take place in Sweden but had to be moved to a new host nation after the Scandinavian country refused to classify TI10 as an elite sporting event.

Already delayed in 2020, The International 10 was supposed to be held in Sweden until the Swedish government refused to accept esports into its federation. That decision caused concerns about the tournament's integrity, as players from outside of the European Union could get their visas denied.

In response, Valve announced that TI10 will not be held in Sweden but instead move elsewhere. The tournament organizers promised the fans that they’re on the lookout for another country to host Dota 2’s season-culminating event and that they’re determined to keep with the plan and hold the tournament in 2021.

Valve scrambled to find a replacement city to host the event and needed just over two weeks to announce that TI10 will be moving to the Romanian capital, Bucharest. The eastern European city will host the event on October 7-15 at Arena Na?ional?, a stadium known for hosting big football matches.

Most recently, Arena National hosted soccer matches at the EURO 2020 but was in the past also the venue for music concerts and other major sporting and entertainment events in the country.

TI10 will begin on October 7-10 with the group stage matches, followed by the main stage play, which will kick off on October 12. The main event will last until Sunday, October 17, when the two finest Dota 2 teams will face off in the grand finals for the largest share of the $40,018,195 prize pool and the prestigious Aegis of Champions.

Arena Na?ional? will welcome 18 Dota 2 teams from all over the world. As it stands now, only 17 teams are confirmed to travel to Romania. The final spot for TI10 will be filled in by the champions of the ongoing Western European TI10 qualifiers, which will conclude on Saturday, July 10.

Valve have not announced whether spectators will be allowed at the venue. Arena Na?ional? accepts over 55,000 spectators, however, with the uncertainty of the global health pandemic, more information regarding the live audience is said to follow as TI10 draws near.
