OG Ready To Defend Their The International Title

OG squeeze their way into The International 10
by Tit Krajnik on July 14, 2021

The two-time Dota 2 world champions, OG have made it through the last-chance qualifiers to secure their spot at The International. They enter the tournament as the defending champions, with a mountain to climb as they look to win their third title.

The road to The International was never easy, but this year, it proved to be significantly more challenging. With emerging new teams, the spots for the season-culminating Dota 2 tournament became scarce, with many top teams failing to make it through the gauntlet.

Proving your worth and earning the right to compete at The International is an achievement on its own, but qualifying for the event is only the beginning for the top teams. One of the teams with that mindset are OG, the most successful Dota 2 team in the game's history.

After winning a historic second TI title in 2019, OG became the first team in Dota 2 esports history to lift the Aegis of Champions in consecutive years, and are the only team ever to win the prestigious title twice.

As successful as OG were throughout the years, their run through the 2021 season was anything but convincing. A period of roster instability and player changes led to underwhelming results, as OG failed to qualify for a single Dota 2 Major on the year.

The reigning TI champions eventually squeezed their way into the TI10 Western European qualifiers providing them with one final chance to book a ticket for Romania.

OG's run through the qualifiers was greeted with scepticism from the fans, who believe OG won't be as successful without Jesse "JerAx" Vainikka and Anathan "Ana" Pham, as two key players who led OG to their TI9 title in 2019. However, with the addition of Martin "Saksa" Sazdov and Syed "SumaiL" Hassan, OG proved to be as strong as ever.

After edging past Vikin.gg and Team Nigma, OG's journey through the Western European qualifiers culminated with a five-map grand finals thriller against Tundra Esports, who nearly eliminated the reigning champions. After trailing 1-2, OG put together two remarkable showings on maps four and five to earn their right to compete at TI10, where they'll look to keep their legacy alive.

OG have endured a very challenging path to The International 10, plagued with player retirement, disappointing performances and struggles with roster stability. Yet, despite the many challenges OG had to overcome, they have, in their own fashion, delivered when it mattered the most.

The International 10 will kick off with the group stage matches on Thursday, October 7. Initially planned to take place in Sweden, TI10 moved to Arena Nationala in Bucharest, Romania, after Sweden refused to accept the tournament as an elite sporting event.
