The 2021 League of Legends World Championship Moves To Europe

LoL World Championship returns to Europe after two years
by Tit Krajnik on August 24, 2021

The 2021 League of Legends World Championship has been moved from China to a currently undisclosed location in Europe. Riot Games announced the decision on Tuesday, August 24, just weeks before the season-culminating event is scheduled to begin.

COVID Concerns and Travel Restrictions

In an announcement video, Riot Games Head of Esports, John Needham, explained that travel restrictions and COVID protocols made hosting the 2021 LoL World Championship in China challenging. As stated, the newly introduced restrictions due to the delta variant made it difficult to guarantee that all qualifying teams and their players would be able to attend the tournament this year.

"With the Delta variant, travel restrictions and COVID protocols have been even more complicated to navigate in 2021 than they were in 2020," said Needham.

He further explained that the situation reached the point where it was impossible to guarantee competitive integrity, which Riot Games can't afford to happen for a tournament of this magnitude. As a result, Riot Games was forced to make a tough decision and pivot the 2021 LoL Worlds from China to Europe.

"After considering all potential options, we concluded that moving Worlds to Europe provided the best opportunity for the most teams and their best players to compete."

"We're not ready to announce where in Europe Worlds will be held this year, but accessibility for the highest number of teams and their best players will be the key deciding factor."

Confirmed, But No Set Location

Even though Riot Games have yet to unveil where the upcoming LoL World Championship will be held, it is confirmed that it will take place somewhere in Europe. Potential candidates include France, Germany, or even Romania, the host nation for Dota 2 The International 10.

The 2021 LoL World Championship will be the second major League of Legends tournament to take place in Europe in 2021, following the Mid-Season Invitational, hosted in Reykjavik, Iceland, in May. The change of location also raises the question of how it will affect the schedule for next year.

Riot Games revealed earlier this year that North America should host the 2022 LoL World Championship. However, due to the last-minute shift in location, there is a possibility that the LoL tournament will return to China next year and visit North America in 2023.

More information about the location of the 2021 LoL World Championship should become available in the following weeks.
