2021 League of Legends Worlds Draw Slated for September 22

PSG Talon Move to Pool A
by Tit Krajnik on September 16, 2021

The group stage draw for the 2021 League of Legends World Championship is slated for Wednesday, September 22. Riot Games announced the news on Thursday, September 15, while unveiling further details about how the season-culminating event will play out.

PSG Talon Move to Pool A

Riot Games unveiled more information about the upcoming 2021 LoL World Championship on Thursday, revealing the date of when the draw will happen, as well as changes to seedings. It’s been confirmed that LoL Championship Series (LCS) first seed, 100 Thieves, have been moved into Pool B to make room for the LoL Pacific Championship Series (PCS) champions, PSG Talon.

With this change, North America’s first seed won’t feature in Pool A for the first time since 2018. Meanwhile, PSG Talon will gain a spot in the first pool thanks to their outstanding performances throughout the year.

The Hong Kongese team won both PCS splits, including PCS 2021 Summer, where PSG Talon ended the regular season with a perfect 18-0 record. PSG Talon also impressed on the international stage, having made it to the semi-finals of the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational, where they lost to the eventual champions, Royal Never Give Up.

Having proved that they’re more than just a team from a minor region, PSG Talon received recognition for their performances and, with that, got placed into a favourable pool for the 2021 LoL Worlds group stage draw.

100 Thieves, meanwhile, won their inaugural LCS title at the end of August, when they humiliated LCS 2021 Spring finalist, Team Liquid, with 3-0. As one of the youngest organizations in the league, 100T exceeded everyone’s expectations and rose to represent North America as the region's first seed.

LoL Worlds Draw Explained

The 2021 LoL Worlds group stage draw show will take place on Wednesday, September 22, at 5:00 a.m. PT and will be streamed live on lolesports. The day will begin with the Play-In draw, which will seed 10 teams into two groups of five, followed by the group stage draw, which will divide the remaining 12 teams into four groups.

LoL Worlds Play-In

The 2021 LoL Worlds Play-In stage will feature 10 teams, who have been divided into two pools and will be drawn into two groups of five. Each Play-in group will feature two Pool A teams and three Pool B teams, who will compete for a spot in the group stage.

Play-In Pool A: Hanwha Life Esports (LCK), LNG Esports (LPL), Cloud9 (LCS), Mega Bank Beyond Gaming (PCS)
Play-In Group B: Red Canids Kalunga (CBLOL), Unicorns of Love (LCL), DetonatioN FocusMe (LJL), Infinity (LLA), Peace (LCO), Galatasaray Esports (TCL)

The winners of each Play-In group will receive a direct invite to the 2021 LoL Worlds group stage, while the second to fourth place League of Legends teams battle in a knockout stage to determine which two will join the final 16.

LoL Worlds Group Stage

The LoL Worlds group stage draw will happen on the same day as the Play-In draw, featuring 12 teams, who have been divided into three pools. Like in previous years, teams from the same pool and the same region can’t end up in the same LoL Worlds group.

Pool A: DWG KIA (LCK), EDward Gaming (LPL), MAD Lions (LEC), PSG Talon (PCS)
Pool B: Gen.G (LCK), FunPlus Phoenix (LPL), Fnatic (LEC), 100 Thieves (LCS)
Pool C: T1 (LCK), Royal Never Give Up (LPL), Rogue (LEC), Team Liquid (LCS)

As revealed earlier this week, the 2021 League of Legends World Championship will be held in Reykjavik, Iceland, between October 5 - November 6. Iceland previously hosted the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) when Royal Never Give Up won the title and secured China (LPL) an additional seed for the LoL Worlds.

Unfortunately, the 2021 LoL Worlds won’t feature any Vietnam Championship Series (VCS) teams. Due to the travel restrictions, the Vietnamese teams won’t be able to travel to Iceland, hence they will miss the third international event – following the 2020 LoL Worlds and the 2021 MSI.
