OG Eliminated from The International 10

The two-time champions crash out of TI10
by Tit Krajnik on October 16, 2021

OG suffered a heavy 0-2 loss against Team Spirit in the third round of the lower bracket at The International 10 on Friday, October 15, thus got denied a shot at their third title. OG's threepeat dream is dead, meaning a new champion will get crowned for the first time since 2018.

A Strong Start For OG

The two-time Dota 2 world champions, OG, entered The International 10 hoping to emulate their run from 2018 and 2019 and collect their third TI title. Although many doubted them, OG proved everyone wrong with a solid start to the tournament, finishing the group stage in third place, securing a spot in the upper bracket playoffs.

Unfortunately, OG slipped at the first hurdle, having suffered a 0-2 loss against Team Secret, who sent the defending TI champions into the lower bracket. There, OG faced off against North America's representatives, Quincy Crew, led by Syed Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan's older brother Yawar "YawaR" Hassan.

The battle between the brothers ended in favour of SumaiL, who helped OG secure a commanding 2-0 win. With that, OG advanced into the third round of the lower bracket, where they faced Team Spirit.

OG No Match For Spirit

In the EU v CIS derby, OG were billed as the favourites, albeit they failed to live up to that tag. Although OG played well, it never felt like they were in control of the series, particularly in map one.

Game one ended in favour of Team Spirit, largely thanks to Alexander "TORONTOTOKYO" Khertek, who had an excellent performance on Ember Spirit, ending the game with a 20/1/15 score. Unfortunately, the two-time champions did not learn anything from the first map, ran it back with the same composition, and allowed Spirit to draft their preferred heroes for game two.

In-game two, OG doubled down with Magnus/Winter Wyvern duo, leaving TORONTOTOKYO to pick up Ember Spirit. Making the same mistake twice gave Team Spirit a clear win condition – do the same things as in game one.

Despite all that, the second game of the series was much closer, but it still seemed like Spirit were one step ahead of OG. The game's deciding moment happened in the 19th minute, when Spirit won a crucial teamfight, allowing them to close out the series with a 2-0 sweep of the most successful Dota 2 team in history.

OG ended their run through TI10 in seventh-eighth place, earning a consolation prize of $1,000,500. Team Spirit, meanwhile, advanced into the fourth round of the lower bracket, where they'll face off against their regional rivals, Virtus.pro.

Although an unfortunate ending for OG, Team Spirit are on cloud nine, having guaranteed themselves a top-six finish at TI10 in their inaugural appearance at the season-culminating event.

While Team Spirit have a mountain to climb if they want to go all the way, they are guaranteed to walk home with at least $1,400,600. If they manage to make it past Virtus.pro, Spirit's guaranteed winnings will rise to $2,401,100, or 6% of TI10's total prize pool of $40,018,195.

Ceb Announces Retirement

Following OG's heartbreaking defeat, their star player Sébastien "Ceb" Debs announced he is stepping down from the team and retiring from professional Dota 2 as a player. This, however, is not the first time the two-time TI champions has stepped away from the game, having first retired in January 2020.

"Losing is tough. I'm proud of everyone for what they gave this year," said Ceb.

"Team, staff and fans, you all stood strong. I wished a different outcome for my last tournament, but I'm grateful for everything nonetheless. I gave it my all and came ready, but it wasn't enough this time"

Ceb eventually returned to OG in July 2020 to help the team qualify for TI10 amid the team's inability to form a stable roster. While Ceb fulfilled his promise and led OG to the big stage, he could not help OG to their third TI title.
