Riot Games Leaks 2022 LoL Worlds Host Cities

LoL Worlds return to North America
by Tit Krajnik on November 22, 2021

In a YouTube video, leaked on Saturday, November 20, Riot Games accidentally revealed the four host cities for the 2022 League of Legends World Championship. While the video was made private minutes after, it was up long enough for the fans to take note of where the next season’s LoL Worlds will be held.

2022 LoL Worlds Heads To North America

As announced by Riot Games earlier this year, the 2022 League of Legends World Championship is heading to North America. It will mark the first time since 2016 that the season-culminating event will take place in the region and the fourth time in LoL esports history.

As leaked by the now-removed video, the four cities that will host the upcoming LoL Worlds include New York, Mexico City, San Francisco and Toronto. Billed as the “robust continental tour”, the 2022 LoL Worlds will be the first tournament in two years to span multiple cities.

Additionally, it will mark the first LoL international event to take place in Mexico. However, it remains to be seen which cities will host which stage of the tournament.

In the most recent LoL Worlds hosted in North America (2016), the four host cities included San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. The tournament stages were split between four venues in Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (group stage), Chicago Theatre (quarter-finals), Madison Square Garden (semi-finals), and the Staples Center for the final match between SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy.

A Six-Year Hiatus

Since the LoL Worlds last took place in North America, the prestigious international event travelled to China (2017), South Korea (2018), Europe (2019), China (2020), and back to Europe for the 2021 LoL World Championship.

Although not confirmed yet, the 2022 LoL Worlds is set to become the first tournament to span across multiple venues. Initially, the 2020 LoL Worlds was supposed to be held across five cities in China but eventually moved to only Shanghai due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Similarly, the 2021 LoL Worlds, which was supposed to return to China and be held across Shanghai, Qingdao, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Shenzhen had to be cancelled due to safety reasons and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the country. It eventually moved to Iceland, with the entire competition taking place in the nation's capital, Reykjavik.

Since we’re still a year away from the 12th LoL Worlds, not many details about the tournament are known. It’s unclear which city will host which part of the event, nor will there be live audience at the venue. And while most of the finer details remain shrouded in mist, the LoL Fans at least got to see a sneak preview of where the 2020 Lol Worlds will take place.

The last fully live LoL World Championship event happened in 2019, across four European cities, culminating with the grand finals at the AccorHotel Arena in Paris. Over 15,000 fans watched the game live in France, while the 2016 LoL Worlds finals at the Staples Center attracted nearly 20,000 spectators.
