League of Legends World Championship Heads To Iceland

Back to Iceland!
by Tit Krajnik on September 10, 2021

Riot Games confirmed that the 2021 League of Legends World Championship would begin in Iceland on Tuesday, October 5. The news follows last month's announcement that the tournament has was moved from China to Europe due to COVID-19.

Return To Iceland

After announcing that the 2021 LoL World Championship will be held in Europe instead of China, Riot Games again decided to rely on Iceland to host one of its premier international esports tournaments. The decision follows the success of the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational, held in Reykjavik, and was met with positive responses from the teams and the organizers.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions that are in place to ensure the safety of the players, team members, and everyone involved in the tournament, there will be no live audience at the venue.

"Riot successfully hosted the Mid-Season Invitational this past May in Hall B at the Laugardalshöll without a live audience, which resulted in zero COVID-19 cases among players, staff, and partners," read the announcement.

"MSI 2021 was the most successful MSI to-date, with the final match between DWG KIA and Royal Never Give Up hitting a record-breaking MSI peak viewership of 23 million, and an average minute audience (AMA) of 10 million. Across the entire tournament, MSI 2021 had an AMA of 3.5 million."
