Potential Changes with Bethesda Titles on PlayStation

Xbox back peddles on its exclusivity paradigm
by Joe Wilcock on February 06, 2024

Over the weekend, leaks surfaced regarding potential shifts in Microsoft’s Xbox strategy, particularly concerning the release of Bethesda’s highly anticipated titles on PlayStation 5. Reports from The Verge and XboxEra suggest that both Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Starfield could potentially see releases on the PlayStation platform, adding fuel to ongoing rumors of Xbox exclusivity being reconsidered.

According to sources close to Bethesda cited by The Verge, MachineGames, a subsidiary of ZeniMax Media, is contemplating releasing the upcoming Indiana Jones game on PlayStation 5 following its initial launch on PC and Xbox Series X/S in 2024. This decision, if realized, would mark a departure from the initial plans preceding Xbox’s acquisition of Bethesda in 2021, where the game was slated for release on PlayStation 5.

Similarly, XboxEra reported insider information suggesting plans for a PlayStation 5 port of Starfield after the release of its Shattered Space DLC later in 2024. The report also indicates that Microsoft has increased investments in PlayStation 5 development kits to facilitate these endeavors.

What Other Games Can Make the Jump?

These leaks follow a series of speculations regarding the potential multi-platform release of other Bethesda titles, including Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves. The Verge’s report hints at an imminent announcement regarding Hi-Fi Rush’s availability on additional platforms, with datamined assets suggesting possible releases on PlayStation and Switch.

Microsoft’s stance on exclusivity has been subject to scrutiny, with Xbox head Phil Spencer previously emphasizing that not all games from newly acquired subsidiaries would be exclusive to Xbox and PC. Despite this, the recent leaks indicate a potential shift in approach, particularly regarding Bethesda’s titles.

Criticism has emerged from certain sectors of the gaming community, expressing concerns about the devaluation of the Xbox platform if exclusivity is not upheld. However, Spencer has articulated a broader vision for the industry, stating that exclusives may not be the future. Nonetheless, the possibility of flagship Xbox franchises such as Halo or Gears of War appearing on rival consoles could intensify debates around platform loyalty and brand identity.

The financial implications of these decisions are significant, particularly amidst rising development costs. Microsoft’s recent workforce reductions, affecting nearly 2000 jobs, underscore the company’s efforts to navigate the competitive landscape while balancing financial sustainability.
